The Challenges Of Safety In Sport Implementation

Youth and coached programming is common in climbing gyms, and whether the program is competitive or recreational like a birthday party, it is still a sport program at its core. That means SafeSport training and implementation may be needed across many program types, at least to some degree, and this article examines the real challenges coaches and operators face in putting it in place. For programs on the competitive pathway, training requirements fall under USA Climbing or CEC SafeSport policies, covered in an earlier article. The harder questions surround everything else. Summer camp staff, for instance, often require more training, and local, state, or provincial law frequently dictates what licensing and certification camps must hold. The article uses a Canadian example: camp staff were introduced to the High Five Program, a non-profit with design guidelines for positive recreation and sport experiences, and were also required to hold first aid and CPR, complete background checks including a vulnerable sector check, and more recently, concussion training. All of that stacks on top of the risk management training involved in instructing and monitoring climbing itself. The recurring theme is cost and complexity. Every added requirement, the training time, the fees to certifying bodies, and the labor to coordinate and administer it all, raises the cost of delivering programming. That squeeze is the challenge: operators want to protect athletes and coaches and meet legal obligations, but the compounding training burden strains budgets and scheduling.
