John Heska, a professor and longtime climber, presented research on climber behavior in climbing gyms and why simple safety mistakes happen. He argued that modern gyms are treated more like safe, fun spaces than risky environments, which may reduce caution. Using a survey of 647 climbers, 28 interviews, observations at eight gyms, and review of over 250 incident reports, he found that most climbers were educated, experienced, and aware that climbing is dangerous. Yet many still failed to consistently double-check knots, belay devices, and auto-belays in practice. Heska suggested several reasons for these errors, including complacency, overconfidence, distraction, poor routines, and misjudging auto-belay risk. He concluded that climbing gyms likely need better, more systematized safety processes and behavior-focused risk mitigation, not just general warnings.

Facilities have long been trying to answer the vexing question of why climbers make mistakes that can result in injury. Knowing this answer would go a long way in helping climbing gyms’ risk management programs and reduce incident rates.

To help understand why mistakes happen, the CWA recently sponsored a research project to study climber behavior in climbing gyms and what gyms can do to build good awareness and culture around risk.

The CWA partnered with Jon Heshka, a professor who teaches in the Adventure Studies Department and Law School at Thompson Rivers University in British Colombia, Canada.
