Second, a <strong>counterbalance ascent</strong> allows the rescuer to reach the climber. Third, an <strong>assisted descent</strong> or lowering option brings both down safely. Questions addressed whether a Grigri or a purpose-built descent device is better, the role of catastrophe knots, and when a simple gravity-assisted lower is preferable.

- <strong>Haul systems:</strong> The presenters showed a quick haul using minimal equipment, a prebuilt four-to-one haul system, and a lowering setup. They noted that hauling can be useful when a climber is stuck by clothing, hair, or gear, or when the rescuer lacks the strength to lift them manually.

The discussion closed with broader concerns: training frequency, staff prerequisites, liability, coordinating with local fire departments, and building facility-specific rescue plans.
